Salt Lake City, Utah – In a tragic incident, 23-year-old Rory Swimm was fatally shot in downtown Salt Lake City. The incident took place in the early hours of Friday, October 13, 2023. Emergency responders were alerted at 1:43 a.m. after a community member reported finding Swimm on the ground near 600 East and 200 South.
Despite life-saving efforts by Salt Lake City first responders, Swimm succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The preliminary investigation indicates that Swimm was involved in an argument with at least one other person, resulting in a fatal gunshot near the southwest corner of 600 East and 200 South.
The person killed in this shooting is identified as 23-year-old Rory Swimm.

The suspect(s) involved fled the area in a car following the shooting. Detectives from the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad are seeking information from the community to aid in their investigation. They are urging residents and businesses within the area of 100 South to 400 South and 500 East to 700 East to review security camera footage between 1:15 a.m. and 2 a.m. on the day of the incident.
Authorities are particularly interested in reviewing footage that shows a group of people walking together or any vehicles entering or leaving the area at high speed. They believe the suspect(s) may have left evidence near the scene, and urge the public not to touch any suspicious objects but instead contact 911 to allow officers to investigate. As of now, detectives do not believe there is an immediate threat to the community.
This incident marks the 14th homicide in Salt Lake City for the year 2023. The investigation is ongoing, and the community is urged to come forward with any information that may assist law enforcement in solving this tragic case.
