MUNICH, GERMANY — The hockey world is in mourning as Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Rodion Amirov has tragically passed away at the age of 21 after battling a brain tumour. Drafted 15th overall by the Maple Leafs in 2020, Amirov’s promising career was cut short by this devastating illness.

Amirov’s diagnosis came in February 2022, when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Despite undergoing treatment and demonstrating remarkable positivity throughout his battle, he passed away in Munich, Germany, where he had been receiving treatment.

The Toronto Maple Leafs organization, as well as the hockey community at large, is deeply saddened by this loss. Brendan Shanahan, Maple Leafs president, expressed the organization’s grief, noting that Amirov’s resilience and optimism had left an indelible impact on the team and fans alike.

Amirov signed an entry-level contract with the Maple Leafs in April 2021 after being selected in the first round of the 2020 NHL draft. He was a promising winger who had shown his talent on the ice and his determination to overcome challenges off it.

During his battle with the brain tumour, Amirov underwent chemotherapy treatments and received support from the hockey community. He attended the Maple Leafs’ 2022-23 home opener, where he was celebrated by the crowd as an honourary member of the team.
