Robert Frost News

After being scribbled in front of a book for 88 years, a poem by one of America’s most famous poets, Robert Frost, has been found and will be published next week. Among the unclassified books and manuscripts acquired by the University of Virginia and once owned by Frederic Melcher, friend of Frost, creator of the publishing trade publication Publishers Weekly, the poem was published by a student. graduate discovered.

The 38-line poem, titled “Thoughts on War at Home” and written in 1918, is attributed to the death of a fellow poet during World War I.

Robert Stilling, a student, claimed that Melcher’s mention of an unpublished poem written in a copy of Frost’s book “Northern Boston” in a letter from 1947 alerted him to the work.

In an article, Stilling said that after reading the letter, “small academic alarms” sounded, prompting him to search for the book in the library of the University of Charlottesville. At the age of 88, Frost died in 1963. According to Morrissey, who spoke to Reuters, “you could say that Frost was having trouble with what was going on in Europe at the time.”

Scholars theorize that it was composed in response to the 1917 death of poet and Frost’s friend Edward Thomas, who died in a trench in France. Frost, who was in England at the outbreak of war and became friends with Thomas, wrote poems such as “The Road Not Chosen” and “Stopped by the Woods on a Snowy Evening”.

The poem focuses on a woman watching several blue jays fight outdoors while sitting in a snow-covered house and admiring soldiers in France. Here are two stanzas of the poem:

And one said to the rest, “We must watch our chance And escape one by one-Though the war is no more than the war in France.” Better than the war in France! She thought of a winter camp Where soldiers for France were made. She pulled down the window curtains
