Career

After finishing his education, Rob Strasser returned to his hometown. He did so to establish his own law firm. He worked as a lawyer in Portland for the following few years. Blue Ribbon Sports (now Nike) launched a lawsuit against Onitsuka in 1972. As the company imported running shoes, it collaborated with Onitsuka to import Japanese items. Nike founder Phil Knight eventually sued the Japanese corporation for breach of contract. To win the litigation, Knight hired Rob, and the corporation was successful in 1974. Despite the fact that the corporation encountered audit and managerial concerns in the following year, they were eventually rectified. In fact, Rob was named marketing director after playing a significant part in the success of the sports brand.

Nike became an independent US shoemaker after rebranding. Rob proceeded to market the brand’s products brilliantly, resulting in a tremendous increase in sales throughout the years. In fact, its revenues topped $100 million in 1978. Converse and Adidas led the basketball footwear industry in 1984, while Nike had a 17% market share. The company began to lose money and lay off employees. It chose to sign Michael Jordan, and Rob had a significant part in convincing him to sign even though he preferred to go to Adidas.

The concept of ‘Air Jordan’ was a big factor in Jordan’s signing with Nike. Jordan was penalized for wearing a shoe that was only 51% white. When Rob utilized these severe NBA guidelines to sell the product, Nike reimbursed the penalty. In the first year alone, the firm sold $162 million. Strasser was regarded as the man who saved Nike because of his numerous contributions to the company. While the corporation began to dominate in the United States, he relocated to The Netherlands to take over Europe.

However, things did not stay that way indefinitely, as he left Nike following repeated disputes with CEO Knight. Peter Moore left with him, and they together started a new consultancy firm, Sports Inc. Later, he worked for Nike’s rival Adidas, where he was the CEO of Adidas America. When he took over the company, he relocated it from New Jersey to Portland. He did, however, pass away in 1993.
