Interview with Riley Gaines
Whenever there is a controversy about transgender athletes in sports, transgender swimmer Lia Thomas is in the spotlight. Lia competes for the University of Pennsylvania men’s swimming team. After undergoing hormone replacement therapy, she performed in the women’s team competition.
As soon as Lia started swimming as a female swimmer, she started setting records. The NCAA Championship 200 freestyle final featured Riley Gaines and Lia Thomas as competitors. Gaines was always against Lia when competing in the women’s event.
Riley was recently interviewed by Amy DeLaura of The Washington Examiner. During the conversation, she said:
“I think for sure there will be someone, whether it be a coach, another swimmer, or someone in the NCAA, I think for sure someone will support us. That’s when I realized it’s my duty as a female athlete who has experienced this injustice to really use my voice and platform to advocate for female athletes who are being bullied. emotional blackmail and silence.”
Gaines said when asked why she’s speaking out at this point:
“Honestly, I am speaking out because I am someone who is looking to others for hope and encouragement as I prepare to speak up. When we didn’t see that, it hit me. We women are not ready for ourselves, how can we expect others to do it?”
Riley Gaines was asked by Amy about the prospects she lost while swimming with a transgender person. The diver replied:
“First and foremost, I think the obvious thing that took us all by storm was the situation in the dressing room that completely distracted our meeting. It’s a complete distraction um and swimming is quite stressful so when you get there you’re ready for a quick swim. But you have someone with male genitals pulling his pants down, watching you as you undress. It throws you away.
