On Thursday night, the team shared a statement from his family on social media breaking the news. According to Jeanneret’s family, he passed away earlier that day with his loved ones by his side “after a two-year battle with multi-organ failures.” In their closing remarks, the family said that Jeanneret “will be loved forever.”
Following the announcement, the Buffalo Sabres franchise posted its own tribute to Jeanneret. The statement read, “We grieve the loss of Rick Jeanneret, our famous broadcaster and a member of our family, who passed away today. We offer his family, friends, and the whole Sabres community our deepest condolences.
According to the Buffalo Sabres website, Jeanneret, also known as RJ, had been announcing Sabres games on the radio since 1971 until his retirement last year. According to ESPN, he now holds the record for the longest play-by-play broadcaster in National Hockey League history.
He joined the team’s TV broadcast in 1995 and later won multiple Hall of Fame honors, including the Foster Hewitt Award, the top honor for hockey broadcasters, in 2012. According to ESPN, one of his catchphrases was, “Top shelf, where mama hides the cookies,” which would be uttered after a Sabres player put the puck high into the goal. According to the outlet, he also memorably yelled “May Day! May Day!” after Brad May scored a goal against the Boston Bruins in the 1993 postseason, resulting in a 6-5 overtime victory.
The team’s general manager, Kevyn Adams, claimed in a letter that Jeanneret had not only been the “voice of the Sabres,” but also “the voice for our city,” and that he had not only encouraged Adams’ personal love of hockey, but also the passions of a great number of other people.

Jeanneret’s success, however, wasn’t without difficulty. He was given the news that he had throat cancer in 2014, which caused him to miss a few games that season. Due to his slow pulse, he was also given a pacemaker in 2016, according to ESPN.
