Richard Mathes from Grandview Heights commits suicide

Grandview Heights, OH – In a heart-wrenching event, a 70-year-old man identified as Richard Mathes from Grandview Heights was discovered deceased on Wednesday morning near the Grandview exit on Interstate 670 East. Reports indicate that Mathes tragically died by suicide, leaping from a bridge overpass onto the interstate below.

The devastating incident unfolded following an alleged attempted murder targeting a woman in the 1000 block of Grandview Avenue, just before Mathes took his own life. Law enforcement officers from Grandview Heights and Columbus responded to a distress call around 7 a.m., discovering Mathes on the bridge overpass along I-670 East. Despite officers’ efforts, Mathes jumped from the overpass upon their arrival.

Coinciding with this tragic event, a woman arrived at the Grandview Heights Police Department with multiple stab wounds around the same time. Station medics promptly provided her with immediate medical attention, and she was transported to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in stable condition, with hopes for a full recovery. Authorities have opted not to disclose the woman’s identity at this time.

The Columbus Dispatch posted on Facebook,

“Richard Mathes, 70, of Grandview Heights, died by suicide jumping from an overpass onto I-670 east shortly after atte was pronounced dead at the scene. Grandview Heights believe the death is connected to a stabbing incident.”

Intensive investigations by Grandview Heights police detectives occurred at the Grandview Avenue residence and along I-670. The incident led to a closure of the interstate for nearly three hours, causing significant traffic disruptions in Columbus and western Franklin County. Normal traffic flow resumed around 10:15 a.m. after the highway’s reopening.

As of now, no plans have been announced for Richard Mathes’ obituary or funeral arrangements. Grandview Heights, situated in Franklin County, Ohio, was part of Marble Cliff, one of Columbus’s earliest suburbs, incorporated as the “Hamlet of Marble Cliff” in 1901, with a population of 8,085 according to the 2020 census.
