Fresno police have identified the victim of a tragic shooting incident that occurred in the parking lot of a northwest Fresno grocery store last week. The victim, Richard Martin, tragically lost his life when he was shot inside an SUV in the parking lot of the FreshCo Food Center located at Shields and Brawley avenues on Tuesday night, according to law enforcement officials.
Initially believed to be in his 60s, Richard Martin became the target of a violent act, resulting in multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. The assailant fired several rounds into the SUV, shattering the glass and inflicting fatal injuries upon Martin.
The grim discovery of Martin’s lifeless body was made at around 7:30 a.m. the following morning. A grocery store employee, unaware of the tragic events that had unfolded overnight, noticed the shattered glass and bullet-riddled car as she walked to her own vehicle. She tragically mistook the victim for someone who was asleep.
According to authorities, surveillance footage confirmed that Martin had been inside the store on Tuesday. Store employees, returning to work on Wednesday, were shocked to find the vehicle in the parking lot, leading to the grim discovery.
Upon further investigation, it was revealed that Martin’s vehicle contained more than two spent shell casings, though the exact time of the shooting remains undisclosed by authorities. Notably, there were no ShotSpotter activations in connection with the incident.
As of now, no arrests have been made in the case, and authorities have not disclosed any information regarding potential suspects. This incident marks the 21st homicide in Fresno for the year 2022, as per official records, with a noticeable decrease compared to the same period last year, which recorded 31 homicides.
