The beloved Newark native, recognized for his profound impact on the state, especially in the revitalization of Newark, breathed his last after a brief illness on Saturday.
Berson’s legacy resonates through his influential role as the chairman of the Fidelco Group, established in 1981. His endeavors extended beyond real estate, marking a significant footprint in philanthropy, healthcare, and community development. He had a profound affection for Newark, the city of his birth, evident in his commitment to various civic and philanthropic initiatives.
Among his significant achievements, Berson’s instrumental contributions to reshaping Newark’s downtown landscape stand out. He spearheaded transformative projects, notably collaborating with Audible and =space to offer office spaces for entrepreneurs, fostering a vibrant ecosystem within Newark.
His philanthropic ventures encompassed healthcare, exemplified by his leadership roles at RWJBarnabas Health, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, and Barnabas Health. His advocacy extended to educational causes, youth-centric initiatives, and support for institutions like the Boys & Girls Club of Newark and the Essex County Turtle Back Zoo.

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr., a government official page, shared condolences and wrote in a statement, “I am saddened by the passing of Marc E. Berson of Fidelco. Marc loved the City of Newark and was intertwined in the health, vibrancy and success of our community. He also was a strong advocate of Essex County Turtle Back Zoo and supported our educational programs.”
“We were honored to recognize Marc’s commitment by naming our Education Center as the Marc E. and Randi Berson Education Center. Berson leaves behind a legacy cherished by his wife, Randi Berson of 34 years, sister Jane Wisner, children Lora Hersh, Gary Berson, Kerri Berson Levine, and six grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, at Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston.
