A devastating collision on Sunday evening in Hawaii Kai has left the community mourning the loss of a young motorcyclist. Reggie Kamekona, 29, lost his life in an incident near Kalanianaole Highway and Nawiliwili Street at around 5:45 p.m.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, Reggie Kamekona was traveling east on Kalanianaole Highway when his motorcycle was struck by a westbound vehicle attempting a left turn onto Nawiliwili Street. The driver of the vehicle, a 27-year-old woman, collided with Kamekona, resulting in him being ejected from his motorcycle.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition, Reggie Kamekona succumbed to the injuries sustained in the collision. It has been noted by authorities that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.
The driver, along with her 30-year-old passenger, remained at the scene and escaped injury. The Honolulu Police Department has stated that, at this point in the investigation, drug use, alcohol consumption, and speeding do not seem to be significant factors in the tragic accident.
Regrettably, this incident contributes to a concerning trend on Oahu, with 54 fatalities resulting from traffic accidents so far this year—surpassing the 52 fatalities recorded during the same period in 2022.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the precise sequence of events leading to the tragic outcome.
The Kamekona family is undoubtedly facing a difficult time, and the community is urged to keep them in their thoughts and prayers. Funeral plans and Reggie Kamekona’s obituary will be released by the family as they cope with this unimaginable loss.
As the community comes to terms with this heartbreaking incident, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance on our streets. May Reggie Kamekona rest in peace.
