A devastating collision on Sunday in Hawaii Kai has resulted in the loss of a 29-year-old motorcyclist, Reggie Kamekona. The incident, which occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m. in the vicinity of Kalanianaole Highway and Nawiliwili Street, has left the community in mourning.
Reggie Kamekona was riding his motorcycle heading east on Kalanianaole Highway when the collision transpired. The vehicle involved, driven by a 27-year-old woman attempting to turn left onto Nawiliwili Street while traveling westbound, struck Kamekona. As a consequence of the impact, Kamekona was ejected from his motorcycle.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition, Reggie Kamekona succumbed to the injuries sustained in the collision. Authorities have reported that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.
The driver of the vehicle, aged 27, and her 30-year-old passenger, remained uninjured and at the scene of the accident. Preliminary investigations by the Honolulu Police Department suggest that drug use, alcohol consumption, and speeding do not appear to be significant factors at this time.
The tragic incident adds to the sobering statistic of traffic-related fatalities on Oahu, with 54 reported thus far, surpassing the 52 fatalities recorded during the same period in 2022. The community is left grappling with the loss of Reggie Kamekona, a young life cut short.
As the investigation into the collision continues, the thoughts and condolences of the community are extended to Reggie Kamekona’s family and friends. Funeral plans and an obituary will be released by the family, allowing those who knew him to pay their respects and honor his memory.
