‘Rap’ is related to punishment
Using sing rap in a related sense of criticism or punishment dating back to the 18th century, this is exemplified in structures such as “to take/get the rap for” or “a rap on/over/cross the knuckles” (a euphemism) term for punishment). Is ‘bad representation’ wrong?
Why you should get a bad rap for using bad representation instead bad rap when, by definition, bad rap can be subdivided to mean “a bad and unworthy reputation”? We don’t know exactly. Criticize bad representation like a misspelling of bad rap looks outdated.
Merriam-Webster is a publisher of descriptive (not descriptive) dictionaries. In other words, our dictionary records the English language as it is actually used rather than indicating how the language should be used. (We guarantee this by rigorously analyzing the proof of use.) We see evidence that bad rap And bad representation used interchangeably and our definition of sing rap reflect that. Perhaps continued use (but more importantly the approval of readers and listeners) will erase the bad reputation of bad representation as a synonym for bad rap. bad wrap Alternatives, however, are not supported.
