Randy Poffo’s baseball career: “The Macho Man” Mr. Savage
Before we talk about the figures, let’s just say, “Ooh Yeah!” and get this out of the way. Randy “The Macho Man” Savage, actual name Randy Poffo, was a professional wrestler who also played baseball. Despite never making it to the major league level, Randy played four seasons in the minors.
While playing high school and university sports while growing up in Illinois, Randy was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1952, and he began his minor league career in the Gulf Coast League in Florida at the age of 18 in 1971. He began his career as an outfielder and switch-hitter for the GCL Cardinals, a group in the St. Louis Cardinals organization’s rookie league.
Poffo’s first year in the minors was fairly successful. In 81 plate appearances in 35 of the Gulf Coast League’s 60 games in a season, Randy earned an OPS of.912, according to stats. Although he had a.286 batting average, two home runs, 13 RBIs, and 14 walks, his.420 on-base percentage (OBP) turned out to be his most valuable tool.
The following year, 1972, Randy played more games for the GCL Cardinals and also spent more time in the outfield than he had the year prior while playing catcher. Over the course of 52 games, the power didn’t really grow much, but he still possessed outstanding hitting skills (.274 AVG) and good plate discipline (24 walks).
In 1973, Poffo would split his time between the Cardinals (who for the season went by the moniker “Red Birds”) and the Orangeburg Cardinals (the Cardinals’ Single A affiliate in the Western Carolinas League), each of which he would play for twice. Randy’s effort resulted in a respectable.283 AVG and a.400 OBP in precisely 177 at-bats across the 71 games played between the two leagues.
The Macho Man has some balls!
In 1974, after three years, he left the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Although Poffo had not yet entered the world of professional wrestling, he would contract with the Cincinnati Reds organization and play for their Single A club, the Tampa Tarpons in the Florida State League.
Nearly half of the 131 games Poffo played with the team—or nearly all of his career—saw a drop in his performance. He managed to get 46 free passes and drive in 66 runs despite hitting.232 and having a.308 OBP.
By 1975, Randy Poffo’s career in professional wrestling had taken off and he was working the wrestling territories full-time. The great success “The Macho Man” Randy Savage would eventually experience in the wrestling business would make him well-known throughout the world. But he had a long history in the baseball world.
If Randy Poffo had played in the minor leagues for one or two more years, he might have had his chance and established himself in the major leagues. You can’t help but image Randy Savage’s egotistical “Macho Man” wearing a World Series ring.
That thing is certain: Randy Poffo will never be replaced. superior than all others.
(Bloomberg) Conagra Brands Inc.’s meat snack Slim Jim will take over as the wrestling industry’s main sponsor after the two parties agreed to a multi-event deal.
The announcement is anticipated from the firms for Thursday. Slim Jim will advertise as part of the agreement on all WWE channels, including during several live events throughout the course of the following year, in stores, and on social media. Payment conditions were not disclosed.
The collaboration will officially debut on August 5 at WWE’s SummerSlam event in Detroit with a Slim Jim-branded battle royal. The brand will also take part in three more occasions, including WrestleMania, which is planned for a weekend in April 2024.
WWE has recently incorporated a number of ardent marketers into its scripted stories to advertise goods including Mountain Dew beverages from PepsiCo Inc. and “Army of the Dead” from Netflix Inc.
Slim Jim has a long professional wrestling history. It featured the late “Macho Man” Randy Savage in commercials that aired on MTV, ESPN, and the Disney Channel throughout the 1990s. The wrestler, dressed in flamboyant red and yellow, said, “Snap into a Slim Jim,” then his catchphrase, “Oh yeah!”
Savage, also known as Randy Poffo, died in 2011 from a massive heart attack. In that year, he was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. Slim Jim asserts that their new triple-sized Savage meat sticks “put a flying elbow drop on your hunger.”
