One of the nation’s most influential teachers’ union leaders, Randi Weingarten, was criticized Thursday on CNN for advocating school closures.
Weingarten was reprimanded by CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings during a discussion about school closures and the COVID response in the United States. Jennings delivered a lengthy critique of Weingarten’s pro-lockdown rhetoric by saying, “Speaking on behalf of millions of American parents.”
He continued, “I have to teach them at home,” referring to his four children. They have to be taught at home by my wife. Speaking directly to Weingarten, Jennings said: “I’m surprised what you’ve said this week about your announced desire to reopen schools.
After referring to her union’s involvement in influencing public policy over school closures in her testimony before the Selective Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic on Wednesday, Weingarten said: cause outrage.
Weingarten and the entire teachers union have been criticized by opponents for pushing for school closures during the pandemic. Weingarten claimed that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ handling of the pandemic limits would result in “millions” of deaths by 2021, however, she later retracted that comment. In particular, throughout 2020, Jennings persistently criticized Weingarten for her statements regarding school closures due to COVID.
“I think you’ll find that most parents think you’re the one initiating school closures,” he replied. “You’ve made so many statements that scare people to death about the idea of opening schools during the summer of 20. And I have absolutely no regrets about the generational harm to these kids.
Jennings’ two children need extra support in the classroom, he said, so Weingarten’s policies have had a particularly negative impact on them.
“I have two very difficult children. Do you realize how difficult it is for children to learn at home instead of in an environment created specifically for them? And I’m startled to hear you stand before Congress and the American people and admit, “Oh, I’ve wanted to open them all this time. I am amazed. I was shocked,” Jennings repeated.
