Rachel Bitecofer News
What if everything you believe to be true about politics is in fact false? What if there aren’t any real votes in America or if there aren’t enough votes to choose the next president? What if the Democratic candidate’s identity didn’t really matter? What if there is no such thing as a “centre” and the ruling party can rule, however, it makes them happy for two years because the results of the first midterm elections will be very difficult. poor despite? What if Democrats won a 41-seat majority in the 2018 midterm elections not because candidates prioritize healthcare and everyday issues, but because they’re campaigning? against the government? What if the outcome in 2020 is also essentially predetermined?
All of which is absolutely true, according to political scientist Rachel Bitecofer, who is perhaps one of the most compelling new voices in this year’s political forecast.
Prior to November 2018, Bitecofer, a 42-year-old professor at Christopher Newport University in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, was largely unrecognized in the online and male-dominated field of political forecasting.
Despite the uncertain predictions of other forecasters in the closing days of the election, she then correctly predicted the size and character of the Democrats’ victory in the House. Additionally, she announced her prognosis in July and stayed with it even as the vote changed throughout the summer and fall.
As of now, however, her model predicts that Democrats will almost certainly win the White House in 2020, add seats to the House and have a good chance of winning back the Senate. If she’s right, the eras of economics, incumbency, and government notes are all politically out of date. Her research is nothing more than “overturning enormous notions of electoral theory,” as Bitecofer puts it with characteristic vulgarity.
When it comes to this, Bitecofer argues that changes in voter decisions are more likely to affect current US elections than changes in voter preferences. She is seen by some detractors as a radical supporter of the adage that “turnout explains it all,” making a long round of wins after hitting big once. She offers a slightly different view, arguing that recent elections demonstrate that American politics has indeed evolved and that other scholars have been slow to realize its implications.
