Rabbi Dannel dies in fatal car accident on I-495

Schwartz, MD – A tragic collision on Interstate 495 in Landover, Maryland, involving three vehicles, has left the community reeling from the loss of Dannel Schwartz, who tragically passed away in the aftermath of the incident. The collision, which took place on Sunday, resulted in the closure of several lanes and caused significant disruption.

Larry Kohlenberg posted on Facebook,

“In 1974, I met a future mentor and true visionary, Rabbi Dannel Schwartz; I was in his first confirmation class at Temple Beth El, and we maintained a friendship that has lasted for almost 50 years. We lost our beloved “Rabs” this weekend due to a car accident. I am saddened and shocked by sudden passing; just 10 days ago I was in touch with his dear wife and told her to send him a hug, and he responded in kind. Rest easy Rabs, you will be truly missed.”

According to the Maryland State Police, the sequence of events began when a Ford Mustang traveling south at an excessive speed collided with a Kia Sedona minivan, leading to a subsequent impact involving a BMW. The force of the collision resulted in injuries to multiple individuals, including the driver, passenger, and rear passenger of the Kia, all of whom were promptly transported to the Maryland Capital Region Medical Center. Sadly, 77-year-old Dannel Schwartz, a front-seat passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency responders also attended to the driver of the Ford Mustang, who was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital. The severity of their injuries remains unclear at this time.

As the community mourns the loss of Dannel Schwartz, the family is expected to release details of his obituary and funeral arrangements, providing an opportunity for friends and loved ones to come together to honor his memory and share in the collective grief brought on by this devastating accident.
