Queen Elizabeth II has died aged 96 at Balmoral Castle in the arms of her family.

The photo above is one of the last public images of the Queen, taken two days before her death at her home in Scotland on September 6, 2022.

It was taken by PA photographer Jane Barlow, who was chosen to capture the moment the queen appointed the fifteenth prime minister of her reign, Liz Truss.

On the evening of Thursday 8 September, a notice posted on the gates of Buckingham Palace read: “The Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

“The King and Queen will stay at Balmoral tonight and return to London tomorrow.”

Charles, who became King Charles III after the death of his mother, said: “We deeply mourn the passing of a venerable King and much loved Mother.

“I know her loss will be deeply felt across the country, Kingdom and Commonwealth, as well as countless people around the world.”

BBC radio stations interrupted their regularly scheduled programming to announce the news of the Queen’s death and play the national anthem shortly afterwards as a show of respect.

BBC One played the national anthem following the announcement, showing a photo of the Queen, followed by a royal crest on a black background and the words Queen Elizabeth II.

Ms Truss paid tribute to the Queen and said: “The Queen’s death is a huge shock to the nation and the world.”

“Despite all the ups and downs, Queen Elizabeth II has given us the stability and strength we need. She is the spirit of the UK and that spirit will live on.”
