Who is Philip Marshall?

Philip Marshall, an organist, composer, conductor, teacher and arbitrator who has died aged 84, has contributed to music in ways far beyond local organ confines. His adult years were spent in Alford, Lincolnshire, where he was born in the equestrian west of Yorkshire, in Brighouse.

His extraordinary musical ability was recognized in 1946 when, after serving in the Royal Army during the war, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Organist. He was appointed music director at Keighley Boys Grammar School that same year, and he also began playing organ at All Souls Church on Haley Hill, Halifax.

In 1951, the year he went to Boston, Lincolnshire, and obtained a degree in foreign languages from Durham College, he married Margaret Bradbury, whom he had met there. Dr. Marshall, who became so in 1955, played an important role in the neighborhood’s musical life as the organist of St. Botolph and is a music teacher at the school.

When he moved to Ripon Church, he continued this by founding the church choir school there in 1960. He moved to Lincoln Cathedral in 1966, where he raised cultural standards both nationally and internationally. and international for 20 years. In addition to his clerical responsibilities, he ran the Lincoln Music Association, gave presentations to the Workers’ Education Association, and launched a three-choir festival in 1982. He also taught at the cathedral school. .

Marshall loved organ music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in England. His talent for improvisation and his nuanced accompaniment both reveal his love of color. He is a demanding choir technician, though humble in praise, he has managed to maintain the best standards.

His understanding of the liturgy as a musician has made him a skilled vocalist. Many of his vibrant religious compositions are matched not only on a larger scale by famous and lyrical instrumental works, including the striking Concerto for Piano and Orchestra.

After retiring in 1986, Marshall devoted more time to his hobbies, which included calligraphy, steamboats, cats, and all things mechanical. One of the last custodians of a great British tradition, this humblest man had a deep respect for old Anglican practices.
