Born on April 6, 1944, Peter Elzinga contributed significantly to Alberta’s political scene, serving as the executive director of the Progressive Conservative Party. A seasoned farmer and rancher, Elzinga’s political journey began in 1974 when he represented Pembina, Alberta, as a Member of Parliament in the Canadian House of Commons.
His political roles included chairing the 1983 PC leadership convention and serving as the PC Party of Canada’s president from 1983 to 1986. Elzinga transitioned to provincial politics, winning a seat in the Alberta Legislature in 1986. In Premier Don Getty’s cabinet, he held key positions, including Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Trade and Agriculture.
Peter Elzinga played a pivotal role in supporting Ralph Klein’s leadership bid in 1992 and subsequently served as Deputy Premier and Minister of Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs.
