Pete Buttigieg was an investigative intern at WMAQ-TV and an intern for Jill Long Thompson’s 2002 congressional campaign while a student. Pete Buttigieg was appointed a naval intelligence officer in the Navy Reserve in 2009 and spent a total of seven months in Afghanistan in 2014 before returning to South Bend as a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve until 2017. Additionally, he was the Democratic nominee for Indiana State Treasurer in 2010 but was defeated by Republican Richard Mourdock. Furthermore, in November 2011 he was elected mayor of South Bend and took office in January 2012. Similarly, in 2014 he announced he would seek a second term and go on to defeat Henry Davis, Jr.
He was elected to a second term as mayor of South Bend in November 2015 and in January 2017 he launched his campaign for Democratic National Committee Chairman in the 2017 presidential election, but he withdrew from the race on polling day.
