Pasadena, Maryland – The Mount St. Mary’s University community is in mourning following the tragic passing of one of its own, Paul Keagan Jaravata, a member of the Class of 2024. Jaravata, a vibrant and engaged student, succumbed to injuries sustained in an off-campus skateboarding accident nearly a week ago.
Mount St. Mary’s University share Paul Keagan’s death news on facebook and wrote,
“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants. Romans 8:28 Paul Keagan Jaravata, C’24, passed away this morning. Please join us in praying for the repose of his soul and for comfort for his family and friends. This Son of the Mount will be remembered for his wide-ranging interests, academic prowess, musical talent and zest for life. Two events are being held this afternoon to help students process this tragic news. We will share information about services as they become available. May Keagan rest in peace”.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of September 1st, was reported by a concerned motorist who discovered Jaravata lying unconscious by his skateboard at the bottom of a steep hill along Irishtown Road in Emmitsburg. Upon arrival, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputies found Jaravata in and out of consciousness but noted that his injuries were consistent with a severe fall at high speed, ruling out involvement of any motor vehicle.
Mount St. Mary’s President, Timothy Trainor, shared the tragic news during a moving campus vigil held on Tuesday evening. Students and faculty gathered to offer prayers for Jaravata’s recovery. The emotional event was live-streamed on Facebook, allowing family members, scattered across the country, including those at his bedside in a Baltimore hospital, to participate.
Paul Keagan Jaravata, known as Keagan, was not just a psychology major but also a dedicated member of the Health Professions Club. His involvement extended to the Mount Music Society, the Asian Culture Club, the Photography Club, and the Campus Ministry. He even participated in intramural dodgeball on campus. Described as a “much-loved member” of the university community, Keagan will be remembered for his diverse interests, academic excellence, musical talents, and zest for life.
The Mount St. Mary’s University community joins Keagan’s family in grieving this tragic loss and honoring his memory.
A GoFundMe campaign is launched by Nikki, Keagans sister in law Velazco, for fundraising with the target of $30,000 having title “Memorial of Paul Keagan Alvir Jaravata“. Fundraising page stated:
On Friday morning of September 1st, 2023, Keagan Jaravata was found in and out of consciousness due to an apparent skateboard accident in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
He sustained a serious head injury and fought until Wednesday morning, Sept 6th and was pronounced brain dead at the young age of 21. He is a son, brother, nephew, and friend. He moved into his new apartment this summer and started his senior year (Class of 2024) at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He was highly involved in several organizations and was on the Dean’s List.
He is mostly remembered by his friends for his spontaneity, creativity, and contagious positivity. He went out of his way to introduce himself to everyone who crossed his path and was well loved by all who knew him. Keagan lived life to the fullest and found adventure everywhere he went. His spirit will live on through the many memories of his friends and family.
He has selflessly given himself as an organ donor. Family and friends will be honoring his life in an Honor Walk at University of Maryland Medical Center (22 S Greene St, Baltimore, MD 21201) at 8am (time is tentative), Saturday, Sept 9th. Please feel free to join us. The hospital staff is requiring all guests to walk through security, so we request you be 15-30min early. All friends/family can wait in the lobby until it is time to join him for the Honor Walk. Please bring a photo/momento to share with the immediate family as they complete their walk with Keagan for the last time.
He is loved by so many from all over the world. The family is accepting donations and prayers, as they begin the grieving process of burying their son, brother, and nephew. Memorial services will take place in both Maryland and California. The dates/locations of the memorial services are TBD.
He is survived by his father — Paul Jaravata, mom — Fatima Alvir and his brother — Keanu Velazco.
Please pray for the reposed soul of Keagan and the Jaravata/Alvir family during this time. Keagan and his family are Parishioners at Our Lady of the Chesapeake in Pasadena, Maryland.
