Zach Bannister, also known as Zachariah Bannister and Zack Bannister, was struck by gunfire as his family was reversing their vehicle to allow him and his brother to enjoy the festive lights. The incident unfolded tragically, with Zach sustaining a gunshot to the head. The family’s plea for prayers and support was shared by a relative on social media, recounting the horrifying moments leading to the shooting.

According to Zach’s grandmother, the drive-by shooting occurred when a green laser was noticed, leading to gunfire. She vividly described the aftermath, stating, “His eyes were closed. He was leaned over to the right side. I [saw] blood and [Zack’s brother] said that Zack was bleeding and screamed, along with myself, ‘Drive mom, drive.’”

Jullian Phillips, identified as the suspect in the shooting, has been arrested and faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Lawton Police Department. As of the latest update, Zach’s condition has stabilized, providing a glimmer of hope to the community.

In a heartwarming display of solidarity, Nichole Groshong, a resident of Lawton, Oklahoma, initiated a GoFundMe campaign titled “8-year-old shot while looking at Christmas lights.” The community has shown overwhelming support, surpassing the initial goal of $20,000 by raising $22,379. The funds raised are intended to assist the family with medical expenses during this challenging time.

Zach’s mother, expressing gratitude for the support, shared on the GoFundMe page, “Any help would be appreciated so I don’t have to worry about work or bills so I can be with my son.” The outpouring of generosity highlights the community’s commitment to standing together during moments of tragedy.
