Nikolaus Fischer’s biography
His primary schooling continued in the western German city of Suedlohn/Westphalia, where he also finished secondary school in the nearby town of Stadtlohn in 1954. The next two years he spent studying to become a teacher. a technical chemist (Chemotechniker). He worked for an important chemical company for a year before enrolling to study chemistry at the University of Tübingen in Tübingen, Germany. He received the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree in 1960, a Master’s degree in 1963 (Diplom-Chemiker) and a Doctor of Natural Science in Chemistry (organic synthesis) from that institution in 1965. postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas at Austin for two years before joining the LSU Department of Chemistry in 1967.
Due to visa restrictions, he was forced to return to Europe from 1968 to 1970, where he worked as an assistant at the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the University of Zürich in Switzerland. Until his retirement in 1999, Klaus was a member of the LSU faculty, teaching chemistry from 1979 and Professor Charles Barré from 1997 to 1999. During the 1990s, he also held the position of Adjunct Professor on Botany. He served as Professor, Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Research Professor, RIPS at the University of Mississippi at Oxford, MS, from 1999 to 2003.
Klaus enjoyed singing in the bass part of the Baton Rouge Choral Society (later Baton Rouge Symphony Chorus) while studying at LSU. One can see him playing tennis or jogging on the LSU campus. He and his wife Helga have been traveling since retiring. He is currently researching the history of Silesia, his long-lost country, as well as his family’s ancestors. Two books are the product of this research.
Nikolaus Fischer Research Interests
Research on organic molecules from higher plants is a major component of our research program in the chemistry of natural products, with a particular emphasis on isolation, structural determination , chemical, biomimetic and biosynthetic studies of terpenoids, especially sesquiterpene lactones. The focus of our initial research was on the chemical taxonomy (systematic biochemistry) of the genera of the sunflower family.
In addition, bioassay guideline searches for biologically active metabolites were performed and chemical alterations of active natural compounds revealed a correlation between structure and work. Separation, chemistry, and biosynthesis of natural polyacetylenes from plant hairy root cultures, as well as chemical and mechanical factors of chemically mediated plant-plant interactions (alleopathy) in the Florida Scrub, are other areas of focus.
Nikolaus Fischer Honors and Awards
Corresponding member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences since 1997. (1995–1996), I served as president of the North American Society of Plant Chemistry. Faculty of Excellence Award from the LSU Alumni Association (1996). LSU School of Basic Science Graduate Teaching Excellence Award (1995). LSU Master of Research Excellence in 1989. The Baton Rouge Divisions of ACS and AIChE jointly presented the Charles E. Coates Memorial Prize in 1987. (1979) LSU Distinguished Faculty Member
