The final season of The Flash will see American actress Nicole Maines reprise her role as Supergirl Nia Nal aka Dreamer. This revelation was first revealed by TVLine and fans are thrilled to have her back. The 25-year-old actress has previously featured in Royal Pains, Good Trouble, Darby and the Dead, and several other TV series and movies. Nicole Maines rose to fame in the fourth, fifth and sixth seasons of the superhero series The CW Supergirl, as Nia Nal. She was the first person to play a transgender superhero on television. Here are some details about the American actress and her future role in The Flash.
Nicole Maines has a twin brother named Jonas Maines.
Maines and her identical twins Jonas were adopted by Kelly and Wayne Maines in 1997. Kelly’s second cousin is the biological mother of one of the twins. In a recent interview, host and executive producer Eric Wallace talked about her latest addition to The Flash series:
“As Supergirl fans, all of us here on The Flash are super excited to have Nicole join Team Flash for a one-off adventure as we wrap up our final season.”
He continued:
“Nicole Maines is an amazingly talented actress, and I’m so glad she agreed to star in a very special episode of Season 9, where I was able to pass one of my ‘Arrowverse Bucket List’ teammates: there were two amazing reporters — Iris West-Allen (Candice Patton) and Nia Nal — investigating their very strange and terrifying main mystery.”
Nicole Maines was born male, although she did show evidence of sex change at a young age. She chose to play with toys intended for girls and based on female characters from anime and movies. She was only three years old when she found out she wasn’t a boy, and by the age of four, she had opened up about her sexuality to her adoptive parents.
She eventually changed her name to Nicole (Nikki) after her character Nicole Bristow, one of Zoey’s aides on the Nickelodeon sitcom Zoey 101. She had transgender surgery in Philadelphia a month after graduating from high school in 2015.
A summary of her professional background
The story of Maines and her family was told in the 2015 book Become Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family by Washington Post writer Amy Ellis Nutt. She even starred in the American Network drama series Royal Pains as a transgender child whose health has been affected by her hormones. She was one of 11 people to appear in the 2016 HBO documentary The Trans List. Her big break came in 2018 when she was cast as Nia Nal in The CW’s Supergirl. Maines was a regular on the show from season four through last season.
Nicole Maines won the top acting award at the 2019 Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ Film Festival for her work in Bit, a horror film about gay female vampires. In a recent interview, CW Entertainment President Brad Schwartz praised the show, saying:
“The Flash will be recognized as one of the CW’s best series, and all who participate in its wonderful nine-season streak will be immensely pleased.”
Nicole Maines has written various comic books, including her own Supergirl character, Nia Nal/Dreamer, and also co-wrote the story for Dreamer’s first installment in the Superman: Son of Kal-El comics.
