News Nicole Hockley

Twenty first graders and six teachers were shot dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary School ten years ago. The victims included Dylan Hockley. So we’ll never know what he might be,” said Nicole Hockley. “He’s simply a very cool guy, and he’s forever 6 years old.” But. It just makes me so emotional thinking about him.

Dylan is a cheerful, mischievous and grinning first grader. Ten years after the unthinkable happened, Nicole Hockley will always remember her son this way. On December 14, 2012, a gunman opened fire inside an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Hockley added, “Sometimes it’s super confusing to me that you know, he’s 16 now. “He’s still six years old, but in ten years he’ll be 26.” And I can’t really think of that in my head.

By turning her grief into action, Nicole Hockley is tasked with preserving the memory of her son. Along with Mark Barden, Daniel’s father, the second-grader who passed away that day, she helped co-found the Sandy Hook Promise organization. The organization’s effective “Speak Something” campaign encourages students to spot danger signs.

“We thwarted 11 plausible plans to bombard schools. 400 suicide attempts have been avoided, thousands of mental health interventions have been made, and bullying and isolation have decreased. Therefore, the programs are completely effective and we will only continue to expand on that.

Hockley has been fighting for gun safety legislation for years, all often with setbacks, but this past summer, something finally happened thanks to his efforts. Both houses of Congress have passed bipartisan gun safety legislation. The “Safer Communities Act” strengthens background checks, supports state red flag enforcement, invests in mental health, and increases school safety.

According to some, it has gone too far. It’s the most important gun safety law passed in perhaps 30 years. That’s a big deal, then. Only after a similar shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and nearly ten years after Sandy Hook, did the bill become law.
