News Nicole Auerbach

Nicole Auerbach, a 2011 Michigan Daily graduate, was hailed by colleagues and former classmates as courageous, enthusiastic, and poised. Auerbach, The Athletic’s veteran writer and youngest recipient of the National Sports Writer of the Year 2020 award, illustrates the traits needed for a woman to succeed in sports media. .

Sports have always played an important role in Auerbach’s life. As a child, Auerbach was involved in softball, tennis and basketball, and watched many sports with her father. However, when she enrolled in Michigan as a freshman, her love for journalism was born.

As Auerbach put it, “a stroke of luck” brought her to the Michigan Daily. Auerbach has covered many sports for The Daily during her career. She became particularly passionate about writing about football and basketball in college, a love that went into her professional career.

Whatever sport Auerbach pursues, it is clear that she has exceptional talent and work ethic. And her colleagues were aware of this. Michigan Daily alumnus Joe Stapleton told The Daily, “You could tell from the start that she knew (had to) do and was hungry to learn.” At The Daily, Auerbach established a regimen that honed her writing skills and allowed her to connect with other professionals.

That’s how you get there, according to Stapleton. “You learn everything from qualified practitioners and they understand that you want to learn from them, so they will support you and you can create your own.” During his time at The Daily, Auerbach learned how to network and differentiate himself in business. This developmental style also taught her how to face and overcome challenges.

In middle school or high school, Nicole ran for the position of sports editor,” Stapleton said. “It’s sad that she didn’t get it. I really liked the way she handled herself because it felt like a big hit. She basically dusted herself off, got up in no time, and went on to do great work. The mission that Auerbach went on to set was not only observed by her colleagues but also respected by the working world.

Auerbach worked as an intern at USA Today between her middle and high school years in Michigan. She stayed at the company longer because of the dedication and expertise she showed during her internship as she was offered job opportunities after graduation.
