Within hours of the death of a student in London 15 years ago, the son of a billionaire who fled to Yemen confirmed his involvement with the BBC. Martine Vik Magnussen, 23, was found dead in a basement on Great Portland Street in 2008, her body hidden under the rubble.
Farouk Abdulhak, who is internationally wanted and is on the Met Police’s most wanted list, has never discussed the case. He revealed to the BBC Due to a “mistake in sex”, Vik Magnussen has passed away.
When Martine’s body was found, I was a student myself, and the news shocked me—especially since the main suspect in her murder was a Yemeni, and myself I come from Yemen.
So this was one of the first problems I looked at when I started working for the BBC as a journalist in 2011. Finding solutions for the Martine family, who see her passing as a challenge of international law, is my main goal. Yemen and the UK do not have an extradition agreement.
But it wasn’t until last year that I got in touch with Farouk Abdulhak. I began to correspond with him on social media. Over the years, he has received questions from hundreds of journalists, but he has never responded. But my Yemeni heritage helped me win his trust. He sent me the first text that turned out to be a string of clear messages ten days after we first started texting. He confessed, “I did one thing when I was young, it was a mistake.”
In the tens of thousands of text messages and phone messages he sent me over a five-month period, he never once mentioned Martine’s name or mentioned her passing; Instead, he calls everything an “incident” or an “accident.”
According to the coroner’s report, the Norwegian student died from being “straightened to the neck”, which “could indicate she was strangled, pinned down or suffocated”. 43 cuts and scrapes were found on her body, many of which are “typical of an attack wound or a battle wound.”
Martine wanted to work as a banker in the city, and Farouk and Martine both attended the Regent School of Management in London. At dawn on March 14, 2008, Diana and Farouk were celebrating completing their exams at the upscale Maddox nightclub in Mayfair when her friends saw her for the last time.
