Milan, MO – Milan residents are in shock after the tragic passing of Nathan Morehead, following a devastating motor vehicle accident on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. The incident occurred on Highway 54 in Bourbon County, Kansas, leaving two others injured and the community in mourning.
The accident unfolded around 6:45 in the evening at mile marker 359, near the intersection of Highway 54 and K3. According to the Kansas State Highway Patrol, Rebecca L. Shinn, 75, of Uniontown, Kansas, was driving a 2019 Toyota Rav4 westbound on Highway 54, traveling alone. Simultaneously, Heath A. Baker, 35, from Nevada, Missouri, was operating a 2016 Jeep Wrangler in the opposite direction, heading east.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Shinn failed to yield while attempting a left turn onto K3 Highway, resulting in a collision between the Rav4 and the Wrangler. Tragically, Morehead, who was a passenger in Baker’s vehicle, did not survive the impact. Neither Baker nor Morehead were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting Shinn, who sustained minor injuries, to Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas. Despite Shinn wearing her seat belt, Baker, who was seriously injured due to not wearing a seat belt, had to be evacuated to St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment.
James Snyder shared a post on fb on the death of Nathan Morehead:
I’m not really sure where to begin with this post, but let’s start like this. Nathan Morehead. If you know him then you know, he didn’t have a very big circle that he let alot of people into. He also would drop whatever he was doing to help you out if needed. It’s with a very heavy heart that I say goodbye to you my friend. Thank you for all the great memories, such as helping me harvest my 1st coyote. You where always the first person I’d call as soon as my truck tires hit Kirksville. You made it a point to always stop by camp, and show me and all who came with me love. You are a great man, friend, and father. The world is worse off without you in it. I will miss you, but until we me meet again, Rest In Peace brother!
Both vehicles suffered extensive damage and were later towed to a local yard for further examination. The Milan community is left mourning the loss of Morehead, while simultaneously hoping for a swift and full recovery for the injured individuals.
Plans for Nathan Morehead’s obituary and funeral arrangements are anticipated, offering an opportunity for friends, family, and community members to come together in support during this difficult time.
