Smiles a Lot was a Lakota Sioux man living in Colorado in the late 1800s. He was involved in a conspiracy in which two Indians tried to steal a horse from United States Army officer John Dunbar. Lakota (Kevin Costner) becomes friends with Dunbar, who saves him from a stampede while they are hunting buffalo. Additionally, he and his companions resisted Pawnee’s invasion of the village of Sioux and fired an arrow at Sakruta, a Pawnee warrior. While freeing Dunbar from the US Army, Smiles a Lot transported the horses used by Wind in His Hair (Rodney A. Grant) and his group of warriors.
Sergeant Lawrence Bauer whipped Smiles a Lot in the face, causing him to punch him in the chest. Dunbar left the tribe in 1864 so the Army couldn’t find the Lakota, but Smiles a Lot sent him a notebook he found after Dunbar was freed. Dances with Wolves, directed by Kevin Costner and released on November 9, 1990, was a box office success, earning over $400 million. It received several Academy Award nominations in 1991.
