Hale was born in 1908 in Boston, the daughter of two painters Philip Leslie Hale and Ruth Hale. She studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and worked as a painter briefly before turning to acting.
She made her Broadway debut in 1937 in the play “The Late Christopher Bean.” Her film debut came in 1944 with a small role in “Mrs. Parking lot.”
In 1956, she appeared in Cecil B. DeMille’s epic “The Ten Commandments” as a palace maid. She also had roles in the films “The War of the Worlds” (1953), “The Flight That Disappeared” (1961) and “The Lottery” (1969).
On television, Hale starred in the Whirlybirds series (1957-60) as Helen Carter, a helicopter pilot. She also appeared in the series “Days in Death Valley”, “Family Story” and “Wild West”.
