According to the Wall Street Journal on Friday, federal prosecutors in Manhattan are looking into whether Nadine Arslanian, the wife of Democratic Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), received gifts or services from people who have ask her husband for help or not.
According to the page, the United States Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York has summoned Arslanian associates as part of an investigation and requested information regarding both Menendez and Arslanian.
This investigation differs from the one conducted in 2015 and resulted in bribery and corruption charges against Menendez, 68, which culminated in a mistrial two years later.
According to the Journal, the current investigation began at least in 2019 when federal agents executed a search warrant for New Jersey businessman Wael Hana. Hana, an Arslanian acquaintance, controls the only organization authorized to certify meat shipments to Egypt as halal.
This investigation differs from the one conducted in 2015 and resulted in bribery and corruption charges against Menendez, 68, which culminated in a mistrial two years later.
According to the Journal, the current investigation began at least in 2019 when federal agents executed a search warrant for New Jersey businessman Wael Hana. Hana, an Arslanian acquaintance, controls the only organization authorized to certify meat shipments to Egypt as halal.
According to court records, investigators appear to be looking into the possibility of clandestine lobbying abroad. The magazine quoted Hana’s lawyer as saying that his client obtained a halal certification contract with Egypt “without any assistance from any state official of the United States.”
Antranig Aslanian, an attorney from New Jersey, is said to have also been summoned as part of the investigation. According to reports, Aslanian and Nadine Arslanian have known each other for a long time. Aslanian admitted to the Journal that he was unaware of the prosecutors’ targets.
Prosecutors claim that in the 2015 lawsuit against Menendez, Florida ophthalmologist Dr. Salomon Melgen offered him more than $1 million for private jet trips, vacations and other gifts in exchange for helping the doctor get a visa for his foreign girlfriend.
In addition, according to investigators, Menendez received large political donations in exchange for helping Melgen win lucrative government contracts. Michael Soliman, an adviser to Menendez, told The Post last month that although the senator “knew about an investigation,” he “didn’t know the scope.”
According to Soliman, as always, the senator is ready to provide any assistance he or his office requires, should any formal request be made.
