Controversial Mohammed Shami
Shami’s brother, Mohammed Haseeb, was detained in January 2016 on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and forcing officers to release several men detained on suspicion of cow killing. However, his father denied those claims and said that his family was targeted due to their religion and Shami’s notoriety. Haseeb was later released on bail.
In March 2018, Hasin Jahan, his wife, accused him of having an extramarital affair and torturing her for more than two years both mentally and physically. On January 23, 2023, a court in Kolkata ordered him to pay his estranged wife Hasin Jahan Rs. 1.30 lakh monthly alimony, Rs. 50,000 personal alimony and the rest is Rs. 80,000 in maintenance.
Facts about Mohammed Shami
- Mohammed Shami, a diligent learner in his late teens, often arrives at the practice site an hour early. Then he would make his own nets and work hard for hours practicing.
- It’s interesting to note that Shami’s three siblings are all fast bowling like a childhood dream.
- Shami owes his father Tousif Ali credit for his achievements. He claims that his father was the only one who saw his real talent in bowling and convinced him to give the sport a try.
- Shami’s father quickly took him to a neighborhood cricket instructor named Badruddin Siddique after discovering his abilities. Badruddin recalls in an interview that when I first saw him bowling over the net as a 15-year-old kid, I thought he was not normal. So I chose to train him. Due to the lack of cricket clubs in this country, I spent a year preparing him for the UP Tests. He is really diligent, reliable and cooperative. He didn’t miss a single day of training. He was particularly good at bowling in the under-19s trials, but politics prevented him from being selected. When they asked me to bring him in next year, I refused because I didn’t want Shami to miss a year.
- Shami started playing for Dalhousie Athletics Club while he was still in Kolkata, where Debabrata Das, a former assistant secretary of the Bengal Cricket Association, has noted. He paid INR 75,000 to sign Shami for his own team, the Town Club, after being impressed by his bowling. Das testified that Shami had temporarily stayed at his house in 2005 because he had nowhere to stay in Kolkata at the time.
