News Miriam Lancewood
The deep forests of New Zealand, where author Miriam Lancewood and husband Peter Raine reside, don’t have a clock. Every dawn, the first bellbird called Lancewood to life while the sky was still dark. The couple have decided to live on the road for the past ten years.
She pulls out her gun and starts hunting for their breakfast. When I first met Lancewood, she was promoting her best-selling memoir Woman in the Wild, and she told me that Peter was the chef at a literary festival in Dubai.
Since 2010, they have camped in the remote forests of New Zealand, living alone and close to nature. Their lives are recorded in the book. Later this year, her second book, Wild at Heart, which describes a 2,000-kilometer hike across Europe, is due out.
Lancewood, 36 years old, Dutch, is lively and eager to join the discussion. The former pole vault champion lived outdoors, often in inclement weather, hunting animals and foraging for edible plants without letting that dampen his enthusiasm.
Lancewood used to teach at a school in Zimbabwe after receiving a degree in physical education. She then went to India, where she met her husband. Raine, a former professor of philosophy and ecology, was 52 years old when Lancewood, then 22, ran into the restaurant.
He traveled all over India while living the nomadic lifestyle at the time. “I have never met someone quite like him. He is wiser, stronger and older. Aside from wanting to live an interesting life with him because I was already impressed, not having to work is all the more appealing to me, Lancewood added with a smile.
Together they traveled through Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea as well as the Himalayas. They finally jumped in 2010 by expanding their passion for adventure by living in the wild with little food supply and relying solely on their savings.
A few years later, they moved to New Zealand, Peter’s hometown. They would walk to the nearby town to replenish supplies every few months. “We let go of our past by selling our belongings and saying goodbye to our loved ones. The future is a blank wall for us because we don’t make any plans. Most people feel secure because they are connected to their past and future. For us, giving up everything
