News Miguel Andujar

The New York Yankees haters out there must first take in some terrible news. Official news: Miguel Andjar no longer works for Major League Baseball. Neither did Clint Frazier. Thus, all the quirky, original Andjar-Frazier commercial jokes are gone. We apologize for sabotaging comedy in this way.

The Pirates announced on Friday that they had assigned Andjar to another team. They will have seven days (with luck) to find a trading partner, after which he will be released. Ironically, the Yankees turned down commercial offers that could have brought Andjar into the Gerrit Cole negotiations a few years ago, but the Pirates asked for him after the Yankees’ DFA disqualified him in September.

Now, the Pirates have eliminated him to make room on the 40-man roster for Andrew McCutchen. And given the amount of holes the Pirates roster has, it’s uncertain whether another MLB team would have taken a chance with Andjar had he not been involved in Pittsburgh’s scheme.

That begs the question of why the Yankees kept him so long for reasons at both extremes. If you remember correctly the rumors about the Nolan Arenado deal, they didn’t want to move him in 2018 and 2019 because they thought he was too valuable an asset. After that, although he still had some value in him for 2020–2022, they refused to move him. There are some, but not many! Better than the DFA once he’s completely depreciated to make way for a useful substitute.
