Middlesbrough, UK – The sporting community mourns the loss of Ian Robinson, a revered figure known for his remarkable contributions to Acklam Rugby Club and Middlesbrough Judo. His passing was announced by Middlesbrough Judo Club through a heartfelt social media tribute, conveying the sad news of his peaceful passing on Tuesday evening, surrounded by his beloved family.

Who Was Ian Robinson?Ian Robinson, affectionately referred to as “Big Robbo,” made a lasting impact as both a formidable judo competitor and a dedicated coach at Middlesbrough Judo in the United Kingdom. Renowned internationally for his judo prowess, Robinson ventured into rugby, joining Acklam Rugby Club a few years after its establishment.

Despite being new to the sport, Robinson swiftly evolved into a formidable prop, earning admiration for his scrummaging skills. Notably, alongside his younger brother Keith, he played a pivotal role as Acklam Rugby Club secured the Yorkshire Silver Trophy during the 1979/1980 season. Robinson’s coaching extended to nurturing Acklam’s junior players, some of whom flourished into successful rugby careers, including his son Martin.

Robinson’s passion for rugby endured well into his 40s, as he continued playing for the Talbots, Acklam’s veterans team. While known for his competitiveness on the field, he was equally cherished for his warmth off the pitch, despite sharing what some fondly recall as the “worst jokes ever.”

Remembered as a loving family man, a cherished friend, and an enduring club legend, Robinson’s impact extended far beyond sports. His devotion and love were deeply treasured by his wife, Lorraine, children Martin and Tracy, and his entire family.
