Before taking on the role of assistant coach of the Missouri Tigers men’s basketball team, Porter had a successful basketball career. Michael’s basketball career turned to music.
First, Porter played basketball for Athletes in Action, a Cincinnati-based Christian sports league that featured former college athletes. Athletes sent by AIA to train high school students in inner-city Cincinnati. In 1991, Michael founded Bible study groups and tutored basketball. Many students have become his close friends.
Since it was difficult for the students to understand the words, he started rapping, which was what most students loved at the time, to teach them about the Bible and life lessons. Porter started rapping as his new teaching strategy despite having no musical training. The student begins to understand the teacher and his important lessons. He considers his transition to rapping a career, but he sticks to basketball.
Porter gained most of his basketball knowledge while serving as Upward Basketball’s head coach from 2003 to 2006. Along with his basketball skills, Michael helped athletes hone their qualities. Increase self-confidence and strengthen character. Porter spent five seasons professionally with AIA, competing around the world.
After serving as assistant coach during Porter’s first two years at Mizzou, Porter was appointed director of player development ahead of the 2019–20 season. The Missouri Tigers’ three-year, $1,125 million contract recently ended on the last day of April this year and has not been renewed.
