Former President of the GAA 93 years old. Dr Loftus is a native of Crossmolina, County Mayo, and he played for Mayo’s senior team that won the 1951 All-Ireland final.
From 1949 to 1953, during his time with the county, he won four championships. Dr Loftus continued to referee games at club and inter-district level after his retirement, and in 1965 and 1968 he refereed the all-Ireland final.
The licensed physician also operated a medical practice in the northern area of Mayo, and for a time served as the area coroner. His daughter-in-law’s current coronation officer in the Mayo region is Dr. Eleanor Fitzgerald.
Following the end of his refereeing career, Dr. Loftus was appointed chairman of the Connacht GAA Board. He then served as chairman of the committee to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Association’s founding in 1984. Dr. Loftus has been a vocal opponent of alcohol abuse in society throughout his professional life.
