In a tragic incident that unfolded early Monday, a security guard at the Pickering Casino Resort in Ontario lost his life in a devastating shooting. Durham Regional Police responded to a report of multiple shots fired at approximately 5:05 a.m. at the casino, located at 888 Durham Live Ave., near Church Street and Highway 401.
Upon arrival, officers were directed inside the casino and discovered a man, later identified as 34-year-old Michael Ferdinand, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, Ferdinand was rushed to a trauma center with critical injuries and, regrettably, was later pronounced dead.
The victim has been pronounced deceased in hospital and the Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation.

Durham Police Sgt. Joanne Bortoluss addressed the media, confirming that the shooting took place inside the establishment. The suspects, a group of armed men and women, swiftly fled the scene after the incident and are currently at large.
Bortoluss stressed that at this stage, the incident does not appear to be targeted. Ferdinand, diligently performing his security duties, became involved with these individuals during the tragic encounter that resulted in his untimely demise.
The police are actively investigating the circumstances leading up to the incident and are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid in the investigation. Homicide detectives are collaborating with the casino to review surveillance footage and have already interviewed several witnesses.
The casino and hotel have been temporarily closed as the investigation continues, although guests are being allowed to enter and leave the premises. The authorities have extended their condolences to Ferdinand’s family and are determined to bring those responsible for this senseless act to justice.
