This is great! Tell me about the small production you are involved in. Meng Mei: What exactly am I doing? [laughs] My Neighbor Totoro, the first stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli film, has just wrapped up rehearsals at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. Ghibli is working with us on that project, which is great because we can get their input. The first Princess Mononoke adaptation I ever did was also a Studio Ghibli adaptation, so I feel like I’ve ended this decade of my career with Ghibli, which is awesome.
That’s incredible. It was the perfect moment to hear how you connected the dots from the beginning of your career and your current position. You can see the similarities and how it relates to your younger self. I’m really excited to see it and can’t wait. MM: You always give me advice to enjoy myself and my achievements. We both entered the field at about the same time, and I am inspired by everything you do and what you stand for. Tell me about your recent activities.
I performed in Paulette Randall’s new play The Fellowship, produced by Paulette Randall at the Hampstead Theatre, where we ended the show in July. We had a great run, but a few days before we started previewing, something happened that forced me to take on the lead role. That certainly came as a surprise. The universe declared, “You won’t sit in the dressing room, you won’t leave the stage!” It’s not in the plan; I was quite happy doing my three scenes. [Two laughs] Because the plot focuses on a British Jamaican family and mainly focuses on the two sisters and generational issues, Paulette was able to create such a nurturing environment.
It uses a comprehensive strategy. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed this, but no matter how much you share and how much effort you put into Rising Waves, you still have to constantly remind yourself of [advice] you gave it to someone else. MM: You have to absorb exactly what you put on the outside. Although we may want to say, “Yes, take the place,” it is important to keep in mind that “I have to take the place, too.” [laughs]
That is correct. We must constantly confront our internalized racism, as well as our inner delusions. Due to the socialization that we have received in this country, we must have that discussion. We must constantly engage in this conversation, spending time alone and in silence.
