Nippenose Township was struck by tragedy on a fateful late Tuesday morning when Porter Township resident Stephen W. Zwald, aged 57, lost control of his Dodge Ram pickup truck on Route 44. The devastating incident occurred roughly half a mile south of State Street when Zwald’s vehicle collided forcefully with a utility pole.
At the scene of this heart-wrenching accident, Jerold Ross, the county’s chief deputy coroner, made the somber pronouncement that Stephen W. Zwald had tragically succumbed to blunt force trauma injuries. The incident unfolded at approximately 11:30 a.m., casting a pall of sorrow over the community.
Swiftly responding to the emergency, dedicated volunteer firefighters from Antes Fort, Jersey Shore, and Nippenose Township employed extraction tools to carefully recover Mr. Zwald’s body from the wreckage. In the interest of public safety, the two-lane state highway had to be temporarily closed for about 40 minutes.
Following the brief closure, one lane was reopened to traffic, allowing movement while the damaged truck was prepared for removal from the scene.
