The Hannibal community is mourning the untimely demise of 31-year-old Matthew Sims, a Hannibal High School and Northern Illinois University alumnus, following a fatal car crash that also injured another individual. The tragic incident occurred on Friday morning in Hannibal, MO, on Route MM westbound, prompting a swift response from law enforcement agencies who arrived at the scene at approximately 11:37 A.M.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Matthew was driving a 2022 Winnebago when he attempted to overtake another vehicle at high speed, resulting in a collision with a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The driver of the Jeep, identified as Tyler J. White, was airlifted to University Hospital in Columbia, MO, with non-life-threatening injuries.
Matthew Sims was rushed to Hannibal Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased at approximately 1 P.M. Investigators revealed that the driver of the Jeep was not wearing a seat belt during the time of the accident. Born on November 8, 1991, in Hannibal, MO, Matthew was a standout athlete in high school, excelling in football and track for the Pirates and earning accolades on the all-state teams.
A passionate ice hockey player, Matthew brought energy and skill to the game. Continuing his academic journey at Northern Illinois University, he became the starting placekicker for the Huskies football team, earning multiple all-conference team honors over three years. His pivotal role in leading the Huskies to the Orange Bowl in 2013 exemplified his impactful contributions during his time at NIU, reflecting his deep-rooted love for sports.
