Carmel, Indiana – The Butler University community and beyond are mourning the untimely passing of alumnus Matt Merlina, who tragically lost his life on Monday, the 27th of November 2023, at the age of 26. The news of his death was confirmed through a heartfelt Facebook post that celebrated his big heart, constant giving spirit, and the impact he had on those around him.
A devoted son, brother, and grandson, Matt Merlina had a deep connection to Butler University, where he pursued his undergraduate degree after graduating from Guerin Catholic High School. Known for his exceptional athletic prowess, Matt remained a loyal supporter of the Butler Bulldogs throughout his life.
In his professional life, Matt took pride in his work as a dedicated employee at Knowledge Services. However, beyond his career, he cherished his role as an uncle, always making time for family and friends. Matt was recognized for his unconditional love and readiness to lend a helping hand to those in need. His infectious smile, hearty laughter, and zest for life left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Matt’s sudden and tragic passing has left family, friends, and colleagues devastated. The Facebook post honoring him expressed the love and loss felt by those close to him, emphasizing his impact as a solid rock for many.
Matt Merlina is survived by his parents, Dominic and Rebecca Merlina, his brother Dominic (Bridget) Merlina, sister Monica (Brad) Conner, niece Luna Anne Conner, maternal grandmother Barbara Smith, paternal grandparents Andrea and Angela Merlina, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023, at 11 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, located at 14598 Oak Ridge Drive, Carmel, IN. Viewings will take place on Thursday, November 30th, from 4 – 8 PM and on Friday, December 1, from 9 – 10:30 AM prior to the funeral at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
