The whole thing started during the third season of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in 2005, when the late-night TV host jokingly apologized to Damon for running out of time as he closed off his show. 2013’s “We Had a Bad Show,” Kimmel said to NPR. “The guests were bad, and I was feeling pretty bad about myself at the end of the program, so I decided to say [it] for the amusement of one of our producers, who was standing next to me.” The producer of Kimmel’s show enjoyed the joke, so the host decided to do it each and every night.
Why, therefore, would Kimmel make Damon the punchline of his jokes? The actor from “Air” was the first name that came to mind, according to him. “I was trying to think of an A-list star and somebody we absolutely would not bump if he was on the show,” said Kimmel. The two have been playing it up ever since with various insults on talk programs and in interviews, as well as a series of humorous films, including one from 2015 where the two decided to go to “couples therapy.” The tiny joke soon became a beast of its own.
Most recently, the two started making fun of one another once more, with Kimmel making fun of Damon while he presented the 2023 Academy Awards. The emcee sarcastically asked Jessica Chastain in the audience, “Was it difficult filming your movie ‘The Martian’ because your costar Matt Damon can’t read and smells like dog medicine?”
During the latter’s “Air” red carpet premiere on March 27, when they both spoke to Entertainment Tonight, Kimmel and Damon continued their verbal sparring. The “Air” star joked to ET when asked if he would ever bury the hatchet with Kimmel, “No, no, he’s an asshole. Why on earth would I do that? He is a horrible person. He is an obviously horrible man. Kimmel joked to the site, “I just can’t imagine,” at the time.
During his appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on March 28, Damon’s “Air” co-star Ben Affleck attempted to mediate a reconciliation between the two. Jason Bateman, Viola Davis, Chris Tucker, and Marlon Wayans are all part of the film’s ensemble, along with Damon. When the host failed to include Damon, Affleck remarked, “I understand you have your feuds and everything, but Matt is a friend of mine.” He continued, “Honest to God, if you simply asked him one question about the movie, it would mean a lot to me. He’s reachable through phone.
Damon’s visage comes on the huge screen behind Kimmel’s studio desk in spite of the host’s protestations, and the two really have a pleasant discussion about the movie. But as Damon responds to Kimmel’s query, his screen begins to jitter, and soon a carousel of image-distorting filters begin to annoy him. After that, the irate actor tells Kimmel, “Why don’t you take your little show and shove it up your big hairy ass!” to terminate their conversation.
We can’t help but wonder what may have occurred if the host had mentioned another A-list actor back in 2005, such as Kevin Bacon or perhaps Leonardo DiCaprio, even if we can’t picture a world without their infamous feud.
