When KMET (now KTWV, 94.7 FM) first rose to fame in the 1970s, “The Burner” Mary Turner was one of the first female radio pioneers of progressive and rock albums. If you were a listener at the time, you might recall her. In many ways, she expressed what KMET was for her listeners: understanding, passion and humanity, on KMET from 1972 to 1982.
On May 9, Turner died. Ace Young, a colleague of Turner’s at KMET, shared the news and paid tribute on social media.
Turner gave an interview to LARadio.Com’s Don Barrett many years ago in which she discussed her career and the early years of progressive rock radio. “Since there were no regulations back then, it was an interesting time. Who cares if you play whatever you want or say whatever you want? FM at the time was considered ridiculous, especially for Top 40 fans. They were stars, while we were weirdos.
How has her career been affected as a woman in a male-dominated field at the time? “I think women have helped more than anything else,” Turner told Barrett. I was in the right place at the right time for the right time.
Todd admits, “I let my work take hold of me for almost 30 years.” I swore to my family that I wouldn’t let work overwhelm me because I’ve seen too many friends and family do it before it’s too late. I don’t remember the last time I slept at 5 or 6 in the morning
As the network’s top political commentator, Todd will continue to work for NBC in his new position. NBC announced that he will focus on long-form reporting and continue to release “Chuck Toddcast” and “Meet the Press.”
In the email, it was said that Todd would “maintain his role as the leading political voice at NBC News, both in the field and for important events.”
She created short interviews and music news for KMET, which later evolved into nationally compiled Off the Record specials; these shows had a listenership of around 25 million people and are still highly regarded to this day. For her usual evening radio shift, she was one of the first to interview a teenager Bruce Springsteen.
She stayed with Off the Record after leaving KMET, performed a daily show for Armed Forces Radio, worked briefly for a Canadian broadcasting company and even acted contributed to “Music in the Air”, an entertainment program used on the now defunct TWA Airlines. In 1993, she returned for a short time on local air on KLSX (now KNX-FM, 97.1).
