ABC News has appointed Mary Bruce as its top White House correspondent.
Bruce succeeds Cecilia Vega, who left earlier this year to work for CBS News and 60 Minutes. Cecilia worked as the network’s senior White House correspondent.
Bruce stated in an interview that she was “deeply humbled” and “grateful for this opportunity.” Given that she grew up in Washington, D.C., and looked up to leading White House correspondents, she added that it was “surreal” to say that.
Mary has been a crucial member of our Washington team for more than 15 years, ABC News President Kim Godwin wrote in a statement to employees on Friday. She covered every stage of the 2020 Biden campaign and election as a senior White House correspondent, including the primaries, vice presidential and presidential debates, conventions, and five straight days of reporting as the outcome of the historic election was decided. She has accompanied President Biden on numerous domestic and international excursions, including his most recent trip to Ireland, where she has written reports. Additionally, Mary has contributed her reporting and perspective to our coverage of President Biden’s historic visit to Ukraine, the State of the Union addresses, and the 2022 midterm elections.
Bruce began working for ABC News in 2006 as a desk assistant before transitioning to a segment producer position on This Week with George Stephanopoulos. She worked as a multi-platform reporter and White House producer for five years during the Obama administration until being elevated to legislative correspondent in 2015. When Joe Biden’s presidency began, she took over as senior White House correspondent after serving as chief campaign journalist in 2020.
According to rumors, Biden would declare his candidature for re-election the following week. Bruce said she anticipates the daily requirements of the news cycle while also “covering it through the lens of the 2024 campaign.” In addition, she added, she would press the government on the subjects that mattered most to voters and viewers. She answered, “There is a lot of room to do that.”
White House officials will continue to be pressed for increased access to the president. Biden hasn’t given many official press conferences, but he frequently answers questions after remarks or as he walks to Marine One on the South Lawn.
