Born on July 31, 1970, in Cornwall, England, to David and Susan (Glyde) Rudd, Martin was deeply passionate about education and was a lifelong learner. He earned his degree in chemistry in 1991 and his doctorate in inorganic chemistry in 1994, both from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. Throughout his career, he made significant contributions as an assistant professor of chemistry at various universities and held key administrative roles within the UW Colleges.
Martin’s dedication to education extended beyond the classroom. He served as the Editor-In-Chief for the Taylor & Francis journal “Phosphorus, Sulfur, and Silicon and the Related Elements” and was an active member of the American Chemical Society, leaving a lasting impact on various academic communities.
Aside from his professional achievements, Martin Rudd had a fulfilling personal life. He married Kris on November 22, 2006, and together, they explored the world, traveling across the United States, Africa, and Europe. Martin found immense joy in his children—Josephine Rudd Zhong Manis (James), Seth Rudd, Erika Hoff (Mike), and Blake Petersen—and was a loving cat dad to his furry companions.
A man of many interests, Martin enjoyed gardening, cooking, and exploring new restaurants. He took pride in creating culinary delights from his garden’s produce and enthusiastically shared them with his family. An avid soccer, football, and F1 racing enthusiast, he loved cheering for his favorite teams.
Martin Rudd will forever be remembered as a kind-hearted husband, father, teacher, and role model, touching the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his wife Kris, four children, parents Susan and David, brother Phil (Clare), and a host of relatives and friends.
A memorial service in honor of Dr. Martin Rudd will be held on Friday, October 20th, 2023, with visitation from 1-4 PM, followed by the service at Brettschneider Trettin Nickel Funeral Home, 606 N. Oneida Street, Appleton, WI. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to any humane society as a tribute to Martin’s love for animals.
