Mark Zelich, a legendary figure in the world of broadcasting and a member of the WBA Hall of Fame, fondly known as “Z,” has passed away at the age of 95 in Wausau. Zelich was a crucial part of shaping what WSAW is today, leaving an indelible mark on the broadcasting industry.

His career began in 1951, starting with roles as a disc jockey and sports announcer at WDBC-AM in Escanaba, Michigan, and WATW-AM in Ashland. In 1955, he moved to central Wisconsin, serving as a sports reporter and play-by-play announcer. Zelich joined WSAU-TV in 1957 as a sports anchor and later became the television station’s news and sports director in 1965.

During his extensive career, Zelich was the voice of Badger Football on the Wisconsin Radio Network from 1959 to 1970, showcasing his versatility. He transitioned to the role of Vice President of News and Sports at WSAW-TV after stepping down as a sports anchor in 1977. Zelich continued to contribute to the station as a Special Projects Coordinator until 2007, further highlighting his dedication and passion for broadcasting.

Not only did Zelich excel in his professional career, but he was also instrumental in establishing and promoting events that honored high school athletes and engaged the community, such as the NewsChannel 7 All-Stars and the NewsChannel 7 Golf Classic and Pinbuster.

Throughout his remarkable 43-year broadcasting career, Zelich received numerous accolades, including induction into the WBA Hall of Fame in 1998. His dedication to his work at NewsChannel 7 was evident, making a lasting impact both in the industry and in the hearts of those who knew him.
