Mark Tennant, EX-University of Saskatchewan women’s volleyball coach passes away in Saskatoon

Saskatoon, October 12, 2023 – The volleyball community mourns the loss of a true legend as former University of Saskatchewan women’s volleyball coach, Mark Tennant, passed away in his Saskatoon home, surrounded by his beloved family. The sad news was confirmed on Thursday, October 12, 2023, by Huskie Athletics. In a poignant social media post, Huskie Athletics expressed their deep sorrow: “It is with deep sadness that Huskie Athletics mourns the loss of long-time volleyball coach Mark Tennant.”

Mark Tennant, a native of Winnipeg, left an indelible mark on the sport he loved. He completed his undergraduate studies in physical education at the University of Manitoba and furthered his academic pursuits at the University of British Columbia, earning a master’s degree in the same field. In 1971, Tennant embarked on his journey at the University of Saskatchewan, where he became a revered faculty member and took the helm as the coach of the women’s volleyball team.

Tennant’s initial focus was on nurturing the growth of volleyball within high schools across Saskatchewan, a passion that would define his career. Under his expert guidance, the University of Saskatchewan volleyball team achieved unparalleled success. The team secured an impressive seven Canada West Championships and notably earned two silver medals at the CIAU Championships. Moreover, they accomplished the extraordinary feat of clinching three consecutive CIAU titles in the years 1978-79, 1979-80, and 1980-81.

Mark provided over four decades of contributions to the volleyball world as a player, a coach, mentor, technical leader and international representative.Mark’s expertise, knowledge and love for the game was cherished with all who were lucky enough to be coached or mentored by Mark. He was a pillar of the volleyball community in Saskatchewan and in Canada and his impact and legacy far reaching.Mark was involved with Huskie athletics where he coached the Women’s Volleyball Team. Mark established Supervolley, one of Canada’s largest and most prestigious open tournaments, which, over its 20-year history, became the biggest tournament in North America, drawing teams from across Canada, the US and Mexico. He was also instrumental in the development of volleyball in Canada, involved in staging international events and symposiums and shared his wisdom and knowledge both locally and abroad.Sask Volleyball extends their heartfelt condolences to the entire volleyball community who mourn him; his colleagues, coaches, athletes, mentees, friends as well as his family and loved ones, as we process through our profound sadness and loss.Mark, you’ll be greatly missed, but know your incredible legacy will live on for years and years to come.
