Mark Manges, a beloved member of the Cumberland community, passed away peacefully at the age of 67 at his home. Beyond his athletic prowess, Mark was deeply dedicated to his church, family, and community, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Maryland Football paid tribute to Mark Manges and wrote,
“The Maryland Football family mourns the passing of Mark Manges, who was a key part of three Terrapin ACC championship teams. Manges guided the Terps to an 11-0 regular season mark in 1976 while being named first-team All-ACC and third-team All-American.”
Mark’s journey began at Melvin United Methodist Church, where he became a member at the age of 13, showcasing his athletic talents as a star player in the Sunday School Basketball League. Upon moving to Laurel, MD, he transitioned to Liberty Grove United Methodist Church, actively participating in various church programs aimed at supporting the community. In 2007, upon his father’s passing, Mark returned to Cumberland and rejoined Melvin UMC, taking up the role of Administrative Board Chairman.
Aside from his strong ties to the church, Mark was a cornerstone of his family. His support and love extended to his nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, and he took great joy in sharing his knowledge of sports with them. His influence was instrumental in shaping the athletic careers of some, leading them to become future quarterbacks and basketball stars.
Mark was not just passionate about his family and faith but also deeply committed to community affairs. He took on leadership roles, chairing committees and serving on boards aimed at improving local schools and athletic facilities. Mark’s dedication was evident in his involvement with the “We Are Fort Hill” committee, the Greenway Avenue Stadium Capital Improvement Fund, the Dapper Dan, and the Fort Hill Scholarship Fund. For seven years, he diligently provided analysis for Fort Hill football games on radio WTBO, showcasing his unwavering support.
Mark was preceded in death by several loved ones, including his father Roy Manges and nephew Ronald Manges, Jr. He is survived by his mother Norma (Robosson) Manges, his wife of 35 years Janie Sutton Manges, sisters Vicki and Jack Allen, Robin and Jim Diehl, stepson Stephen McKnight, nephews, niece, great nephews, and great nieces.
Friends and family will gather to honor Mark at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, MD, on September 27, 2023, and a funeral service will be held at Melvin United Methodist Church on September 28, 2023, with interment at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Melvin United Methodist Church, the We Are Fort Hill Committee, or the Greenway Ave. Stadium Capital Improvement Fund, reflecting Mark’s dedication to both his faith and community.
Mark Manges will always be remembered for his community spirit, love for family, and unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in Cumberland.
