We entered the execution room at 9:34 pm. I entered through a door with the initials “EC” written in huge letters on it, and I sat down among a few rows of seats in front of four large rectangular windows. There are some lights on, but they are usually dim. The windows in front of us have a black curtain pulled behind. Marcel Williams is hidden behind a curtain, lying on a stretcher in a much smaller space.
We were not allowed to witness the installation of IVs for lethal injection in Arkansas. I saw nothing from the moment we arrived until the curtain was drawn. We’ve simply waited for Williams, 46, to emerge from those windows since he was sentenced to death for the rape and murder of 22-year-old Stacy Errickson, whom he kidnapped from a gas station in 1994.
When a last minute stay kept us waiting in our room for more than an hour earlier in the evening, we did this already. We later found out that Williams was restrained on the stretcher during that time. When the sojourn was lifted, as it is now, I did nothing but watch the black curtain, knowing very little about what was going on with the prisoners.

At 10:21, it was clear that this was the first test of Williams’ consciousness. After that, it appeared his breathing improved, but the situation became more murky as the officer continued to test Williams by touching his hands and face. The officer poked Williams’ eyelids again at 10:27 p.m. These questions are essential because the next drug is a paralytic, which stops all movement.
I’m not sure when the second drug that completely numbs the pain was given. I miss the IV being included. Even as a witness, I could not determine if Marcel Williams was in pain or what happened when he died on a three-drug regimen of midazolam because the sound was cut off and I can’t observe the number of times each drug is given.
